How to tell if your Google and Meta ads are actually working
Clicks and impressions don't pay the bills. Here's how to measure ads by the customers they bring in.
Key takeaways
- Measure ads by leads and sales, not clicks and impressions.
- Without conversion tracking, nobody can tell you what your ads returned.
- Know what a customer is worth so you know what you can afford to pay for one.
- Send ad traffic to a page built for that offer, not your homepage.
- Move budget weekly towards what works and away from what doesn't.
The numbers that matter
Three numbers tell you most of what you need: cost per lead (what you pay for each enquiry), conversion rate (how many visitors become leads) and return on ad spend, or ROAS (revenue divided by ad spend).
Impressions and clicks are useful for diagnosing problems, but they aren't results. A campaign with fewer clicks and more customers is the better campaign.
Set up tracking before you spend
Conversion tracking tells Google and Meta which clicks turned into enquiries or sales. Without it, the platforms optimise for clicks, and you can't tell which campaigns are paying for themselves.
Track every route a customer can take: forms, calls, WhatsApp messages and purchases. Tag the links you share elsewhere too, so you can compare channels fairly.
Let the data move the money
Once tracking works, the job is steady: every week, put more budget behind the ads, audiences and keywords that bring in customers, and cut what doesn't. It's not glamorous, but it's where results come from.
For one of our e-commerce clients, doing exactly that across their Meta campaigns took overall return on ad spend to 12.6 times what they spent. For a B2B client on Google Ads, the same discipline drove more than 278 conversions at a low cost per conversion.
The landing page matters as much as the ad
An ad can only promise. The page has to deliver. Send people to a page that matches the ad, explains the offer quickly, shows proof and has one clear action. Sending ad traffic to a general homepage is one of the most common ways budgets are wasted.
Check your ads in fifteen minutes
- Conversion tracking is set up for forms, calls and WhatsApp, and you've tested it
- You know your cost per lead for the last 30 days
- You know roughly what a new customer is worth to you
- Each campaign sends people to a page that matches its offer
- Someone reviews performance and moves budget at least weekly
- Your reports show leads and sales, not just clicks
Common mistakes
- Judging ads by clicks, impressions or likes
- No conversion tracking, or tracking that was never tested
- Sending every ad to the homepage
- Setting campaigns up once and leaving them for months
- Spreading a small budget across too many campaigns to learn anything
