How to show up when people ask ChatGPT and Google

More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews before they search. Here's how those tools choose who to recommend.

Key takeaways

  • AI assistants recommend businesses whose websites answer questions clearly and directly.
  • Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing people see. Complete it.
  • Consistent name, address and phone everywhere builds trust with search engines.
  • Pages written around real buyer questions outperform generic service pages.
  • Technical errors and slow pages hold back even great content.

How AI search is different

Classic Google shows ten links and lets people choose. AI answers, like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, often name just two or three businesses and explain why. If you're not one of them, you're invisible for that question.

These tools pick businesses they can understand and verify. That means a clear description of what you do, plain answers to common questions, and signals elsewhere on the web that you're real and reputable.

Answer the questions buyers actually ask

Write down the ten questions customers ask you before they buy. "How much does it cost?", "How long does it take?", "Do you cover my area?". Then answer each one clearly on your site, ideally in the first sentence or two of a section.

Short, direct answers are what AI tools quote. A page that starts "We pride ourselves on excellence" gives them nothing to work with.

Get your local basics right

If customers come to you, or you serve a specific area, your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website. Add your services, opening hours, real photos and a link to your site, and reply to reviews.

Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, your profile and any directories. Small differences make it harder for search engines to be sure they're all you.

Fix what's holding the site back

Slow pages, broken links and pages Google can't read will hold you back however good your content is. Submit your site to Google Search Console, check which pages are indexed, and fix errors it reports.

Then measure. Search Console shows which searches you appear for and how many people click. In our own SEO work, steady weekly fixes and new pages are what move those numbers, not one big push.

Your AI and search visibility checklist

  • Your homepage says what you do, where, and for whom in the first lines
  • You have a page or section answering your top ten customer questions
  • Your Google Business Profile is complete, with photos and services
  • Your name, address and phone match everywhere online
  • Your site is set up in Google Search Console with no major errors
  • You've asked ChatGPT "best [your service] in [your area]" and noted who it names

Common mistakes

  • Writing about yourself instead of answering buyers' questions
  • An unfinished or unverified Google Business Profile
  • Different phone numbers or business names in different places
  • Hundreds of thin pages instead of a few genuinely useful ones
  • Expecting results in two weeks and stopping before they arrive

Common questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. AI assistants don't sell placements in their answers. You earn a mention by being clear, useful and well-referenced across the web.
How long does SEO take?
Technical fixes can help within weeks. Ranking for competitive searches usually takes three to six months of steady work, so look at the trend month by month.
Is SEO still worth it if people use AI instead of Google?
Yes. The same things that help you rank on Google (clear answers, good pages, trusted mentions) are what AI tools use to choose who to recommend.
Do I need a blog?
You need useful answers to buyer questions. A blog or a learning centre like this one is a good home for them, but quality matters far more than how often you post.
